The Tangerang City Government (Pemkot) continues its efforts to transform waste into an economic opportunity through various management innovations from upstream to downstream. This approach is comprehensive, from residential areas to the Rawa Kucing Final Disposal Site (TPA).
Every day, Tangerang City produces approximately 1,500 tons of waste, and the city government is committed to transforming this large volume from a burden to a source of economic benefit for the community.
The Head of the Tangerang City Environmental Agency (DLH), Wawan Fauzi, explained that the waste management strategy is implemented in stages and in an integrated manner, supported by human resources (HR), technology, and community participation.
“Waste management is carried out in an orderly manner, starting from residential areas, industrial areas, and even busy centers, ultimately ending at the Rawa Kucing Landfill,” said Wawan on Friday (10/17/2025).
Wawan explained that the City Government continues to educate the public on waste sorting from home and is expanding the establishment of waste banks, which now number over 90.
Furthermore, the Tangerang City Government has implemented Internet of Things (IoT) technology in several public waste bins. These sensors monitor the bins’ capacity in real time and transmit data directly to a control center.
“We continue to promote waste sorting, the establishment of waste banks, and the use of IoT sensors to monitor capacity in real time among the community,” he explained.
Furthermore, the Environmental Agency (DLH) is also encouraging the community to process waste into a source of income, such as composting, maggot cultivation, and other recycling innovations.
“This training makes waste no longer a problem, but a profitable opportunity for residents,” added Wawan.
RDF and Waste Management Roadmap
In the final management phase, the Tangerang City Government will expand the implementation of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) technology—a technology that processes waste into alternative fuels.
One of the pilot projects will be the Benua Indah Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Karawaci District.
“This year, the Benua Indah TPST building will be rehabilitated and prepared for the installation of RDF equipment. We will use this location as a prototype for technology-based waste processing,” said Wawan.
He added that the Tangerang City Government is also developing a Roadmap for Accelerated Waste Management Completion and a Waste Management Master Plan (RIPS) as a reference for cross-sectoral work.
“This will serve as a reference for developing the waste management work plan in Tangerang City,” he said.
A Clean City Without Polling Stations on Main Roads
The Environmental Agency (DLH) is targeting 2025 as a crucial milestone towards a more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly waste management system.
One concrete step that will be taken is the closure of all landfills (TPS) on main roads to improve the city’s layout and reduce visual disturbances in public spaces.
“In 2025, we will focus on more efficient and sustainable waste management. This is a crucial step to improve the quality of life for residents and maintain a clean environment,” said Wawan.
The city government is also encouraging active collaboration between the public and the private sector to achieve the waste reduction target.
“Waste management cannot be done by the government alone. The active participation of the community and the business sector is needed for this program to be successful,” he concluded.
